Are you planning a trip to Spain and don’t know how much time you should dedicate to Barcelona?

We have you covered!!!

Barcelona, a vibrant city full of history, culture, architecture, and art, is often on the bucket list of any tourist visiting Spain. While it is the second-largest city in Spain and the capital of Catalonia, you can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Our family had the opportunity to visit Spain in the Fall of 2021. With its large international airport, it was easy to begin our travels around Spain in Barcelona. Based on our first-hand experiences, we have put together a Barcelona 2-day itinerary. Read more for our recommendations on how to make the most out of your time in this beautiful city!

A few tips before we start …

Placa Nova in Barcelona, Spain.
Placa Nova in Barcelona, Spain.

(1) These will full and busy days. Start early and rested!

(2) Barcelona is a large city and you will need to use public transit to see all of the sights. Barcelona has a great tourist friendly metro system. You can pre-purchase tickets online (here) or at a metro station. There are several ticket options and I recommend doing research beforehand (on the TMB website) to see which is most cost effective for you and your traveling companions. Our family decided on the Hola BCN 3 day pass which included our ride to and from the airport.

(3) Take at least one meal “on the go”. A quick breakfast from a pastry shop is perfect for this!

(4) Meal times in Spain may be a little different than what you are used to at home. A light breakfast of coffee and a pastry is served between 7:00 am and 9:00 am; a heavier breakfast between 10:30 am and 12:00 pm; lunch between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm; an evening snack between 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm; and a light dinner between 8:30 pm and 10:30 pm. Where there is flexibility with breakfast and snack times, do not expect to eat lunch at a traditional restaurant before 1:00 pm or dinner before 8:00 pm.

(5) It can rain (and get cold) in Spain! Like most places weather can change quickly. Be prepared!

(6) We used the Rick Steves Spain Guidebook with maps and walking tours to help guide us through the city.

(7) Like all popular tourist destinations, beware of pick-pockets.
